Where Tattoo Art Meets Fine Art on North 7th Street

The Art Center of Western Colorado opened four new exhibitions on September 4, and the standout is "Age of Creation," on view through September 25 — a show built entirely around artists who work in both tattooing and fine art.

Co-curator Jeffery Johnson put it plainly: "There is an artificial divide between the tattoo subculture and the fine arts subculture; this exhibition blurs the boundaries between the two." The show leans into that overlap on purpose, and its framing has a pointed edge right now — it's explicitly about the patterns of human creativity, not work generated by artificial intelligence.

"Age of Creation" is sharing the building with three other new shows this month: a landscapes exhibit, a collection of local watercolors, and a Permanent Collection showcase built around autumn. All four opened together at the Art Center's First Friday event, complete with hors d'oeuvres from the Art Center Guild and a cash bar, and admission is free.

If you go, time it around the Annual Pottery Sale, running through Saturday, September 26. It's handmade work donated by Ceramic Studio students and instructors, and every dollar goes back into keeping that studio running.

It's a small thing, honestly, but it's the kind of small thing that adds up to what living here actually feels like. Grand Junction isn't just orchard rows and trailheads — there's a genuinely active gallery scene tucked into a building on North 7th Street, putting on shows most towns this size wouldn't attempt.
