Main Street Closes for Candy: Downtown Grand Junction's Spooktacular

Every October, Grand Junction hands its busiest downtown street over to costumes, candy buckets, and a lot of very small superheroes. The Downtown Spooktacular, presented by Credit Union of Colorado, takes over Main Street on Saturday, October 24, from 4 to 6 p.m.

The format is simple, and that's the charm. Downtown businesses set up along the street to hand out treats, and kids go from storefront to storefront in costume. The event also lists activities and performances for kids on the schedule, so it's more than just a candy run. With Main Street closed to traffic for the afternoon, families can wander at their own pace without dodging cars.

A couple of practical notes if you're planning to go. Because Main Street will be closed, the event listing suggests allowing extra time to get around the closure and find parking, and downtown parking is free on weekends. Two hours goes quickly, so arriving early is a good idea.

There's a second option earlier in the month, too. Trunk or Treat Riverside Market at The Eddy is listed for Monday, October 19, from 4 to 8 p.m., a more evening-friendly way to get in some trick-or-treating on a weeknight.

What I like about events like this is what they say about a place. A downtown that closes its main street for an afternoon of kids in costumes is a downtown people actually use and care about, and it's one of the easiest ways to see what everyday community life feels like on the Western Slope. If you're considering a move to the Grand Valley, an afternoon like this tells you more than a listing photo ever could.

If you have questions about the area, or about what it's like to live in a particular neighborhood, I'm always happy to talk.
