Fruita Turns 111: A Party the Town Never Stopped Throwing

Save the date: the 111th Annual Fruita Fall Festival takes over downtown Fruita September 25-26, 2026, with a "Rockin' Rodeo" theme, two live music stages, food trucks, and more than 100 local vendors. That's not a typo — 111 years running, which means this festival predates the interstate, the airport, and pretty much everything else that put Fruita on a map.

It didn't start as a festival at all. In 1914, the Fruita Chamber of Commerce organized what they called the Cowpunchers' Reunion — two days of horse races, bull riding, and roping contests timed to September, right after cattle were rounded up and produce was harvested. Women in town showed off their canning, baking, and crafts alongside it, and the evenings wrapped with dances that, by all accounts, got a little livelier than the daytime programming let on. By the 1970s, that event had merged with the Hunters Roundup and the Harvest Carnival into the modern Fall Festival — parade, outhouse race, disc golf tournament, carnival rides, and all.

What strikes me about that history isn't the rodeo trivia, it's the through-line: a small farm town has kept finding a reason to shut down its own Main Street and throw a party for itself, every September, for over a century. That's not something a tourism board manufactures. It's the kind of civic muscle memory that either a town has or it doesn't.

For anyone weighing a move to Fruita, that's worth more than it sounds like on paper. A town that's been organizing its own harvest party since before Colorado had paved highways tends to have a real center of gravity — a place where showing up to the parade or the outhouse race isn't ironic, it's just what people do in late September. If you're touring the area and want a fast read on whether a town has that kind of pull, festival weekend is as honest a test as you'll get.
