Fossils, Local Authors, and a Museum Month in the Grand Valley

October is when the Grand Valley slows down just enough to enjoy the indoors, and the Museums of Western Colorado have a few good reasons to head inside. On Thursday, October 15, the Museum of the West at 462 Ute Avenue hosts "An Evening with Local Authors" from 6 to 8 p.m., a fall gathering where you can meet writers from our corner of Colorado.

I like events like this because they say something about a place. A town that turns out on a weeknight to meet its own authors is a town with a real sense of community, and downtown Grand Junction is easy to build an evening around. Park near Ute Avenue, take in the museum, and you're a short walk from dinner.

Out in Fruita, the same organization runs Dinosaur Journey, at 550 Jurassic Court. It's an interactive museum with more than 15,000 fossil specimens, a working paleontology lab where you can watch bones being prepared, and an excavation site where kids can dig up real Jurassic-period bones. Two monthly programs fall this month: a Sensory Hour on Saturday, October 10 from 9 to 10 a.m. ($6 per person), designed for visitors who do better with a quieter museum experience, and a free Story Time on Thursday, October 15 from 10 to 10:30 a.m.

When buyers ask me what it's like to live here, the trails and the orchards usually come up first. The museums are the part people tend to discover later, and they're often the thing families end up using most. It's the kind of everyday culture that makes a community feel like home, rather than just a place to live.

If you're thinking about a move to the Western Slope and want to know which neighborhoods put you close to this kind of thing, I'm always glad to talk it through.
