Event Spotlight: Mike the Headless Chicken

Looking for a unique and full of character event this summer?  Head over to Mike the Headless Chicken Festival in Fruita. June 1st and 2nd are packed full of family fun games, booths, and activities, all centered around the main event, you guessed it, chicken! Mike the Headless Chicken was a world-famous poultry that survived 18 months after having its head cut off by his Fruita farmer. Now, decades later, the festival still celebrates this chicken’s grit and persistence.

Kick off the festival with the poultry show to get you in the right mindset for the weekend.  Return on Saturday for a day packed with fun from dawn to dusk. Show support for your community by enjoying a pancake breakfast hosted by Lion’s Club at Hall on the Circle.  Then, take your sports activity pick by participating in the Disc Golf Tournament at the Riverfront Park or cruise through the Mike 5k. If you couldn’t get enough of the poultry show the day before, then head back for the second round later in the morning.  Swing by the Suds Brothers Brewery Peep Eating and Wing Eating Contests. If that doesn’t fill you up with enough chicken for the weekend, then out rooster call and out chicken dance everyone else with The Moose’s dance off. Of course, some great food vendors and entertainers will be present to fill your bellies and your sense of fun in this interesting and one of a kind event.
